Three New Year’s resolutions for your business

The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on the past and set goals for the future. Many people strive to eat better, exercise more or spend less, but it’s also important to carve out resolutions for the way you do business. While January is nearly over, there’s still time to list your aspirations for 2017, and to get you started, here are some that we recommend:

Get tech-savvy

Whether it’s using mobile for payments and invoicing, trying out DIY tax software or investing in your social media channels, there are many tech tools and tactics that can help you do business faster and smarter. The best part? Technology today is accessible to even the smallest of operations, with many of the best resources available on the cheap or even cost-free.

Join in

Word of mouth can be a great business builder, especially for smaller companies that might not have the resources for big billboards or television spots. The best way to get word of mouth referrals is to get involved in your community, whether it’s participating in neighbourhood events, sponsoring a local sports team or joining your Business Improvement Area (BIA).

Pay it forward

Retaining top talent is a challenge for companies of all sizes, and in order to keep business strong, leaders need to continue to find new and innovative ways to keep employees engaged and happy. If sales from last year were a bit better than expected, 2017 might be just the time to start an employee profit sharing plan or schedule a company retreat. Or, if money is tight, consider starting job shadowing initiatives or get the company together for a volunteer day. Your team– and your business– will thank you!
